Emily, I really love how you articulate the problems you have faced using rubrics. I have run into similar problems over the years, and I have spent many hours trying to figure out how to apply the rubric to outlying cases. Seems to me this time would be better spent acting as a coach to my students. I’ve had a few people ask for some tips on “humanistic feedback,” so watch this space for another article coming soon.
