Thank you, Douglas. The notion of rubrics is so ingrained that sometimes I think I am crazy for questioning it. Your comments about how rubrics cause us to grade on a “vague hierarchy” really resonated with me. I want my students to be thinkers above all, and I do feel that rubrics often cause students to think less deeply about what they are writing about.
